Finally figured out how to get Motorola Phone Tools to work with Vista. Download the latest drivers here [Updated November 25, 2007 – the link now will take you to the latest drivers, dated November 5, 2007). You will have to register for the site, but it is free. Download the appropriate file, either the 32-bit or 64-bit version. If you do not know which one you need, you probably need the 32-bit version.
Unplug the phone, run the installation (unzip the file, then right click on it, and select Install), then restart Mobile Phone Tools. Vista will nag you about 10 times for each unsigned driver it is installing, but just be patient. You will eventually get through the install routine. Then, plug your phone in, and it will be discovered and the correct drivers will be installed. Good luck!

Very helpful, thank you for that info. Saved me lots of time.
One tip, I had to go into device manager with the phone plugged in and uninstall the Motorola V3 shown there then unplug the phone and plug it back in otherwise, it would not load these new drivers.

If I understand your question, the way it worked for me was to:
1) Upgrade to Vista
2) Make sure MPT is updated to the latest version
3) Download the latest driver from Motorola (above)

Uh, this topic is about Windows Vista, and using it with Motorola Phone Tools. If you are not using Windows Vista but you are using Motorola Phone Tools, you can MPT from within the program.

Hi Tony, what a pain! I took everything to do with MPT off my PC. I then put the driver on. I then found that I had to manualy load the driver into vista, I then looked for it just to make sure vista had picked up on it, it had. I then loaded MPT 4.0 from the CD that came with the phone, it loaded and yes when vista went to the website for the update to 4.2 it was about 10 times that vista questioned my judgement, but eventualy it completed. I then restarted MPT and when it asked for the phone to be plugged in, vista found my phone within 3 seconds WOW. Thanks very much for your research it helped me immensley.

I loaded the drivers with out a problem – plugged in the phone – no problems there – however when I try and create a ringtone – it tells me failed to create file if I try and save it to my pc or transfer it to my phone… it’s great I can get into phone tools now – but can’t see what use it is if everything I try and do it tells me that it can’t do it….. Not sure if I’m more irritated at Vista or MFT not having a proper update for vista….

You are awesome! Thank you so much for sharing this information. You don’t know how frustratig of a problem this has been for me (then again maybe you do!)
I did everything just as you described and it worked! I am connected the internet through motorola phone tools using my V3i as we speak thanks to your advice!
Another little tip for connecting. Try different USB ports until one works. I got mine to connect after switching ports 3 times. And I also had to get a better USB connecter as well. But I was definitely having a hard time trying to update the drivers until I found this webpage.
THANK YOU!!!

Hmm, mine works fine with Bluetooth as well – give it a shot. Of course, I would connect first with USB, make sure it works properly (sync and all), THEN try Bluetooth. Mine works just fine with that method.

Tom

I would not think a RAID array would affect it – must be something with incompatible drivers or OS differences instead.
Tom
April 1st, 2007 at 11:58 am
Great tip as well – I forgot that I had to switch to different USB ports during the process – Windows seems to use old drivers or something if it goes into the same port it has used before – changing to a different physical port (even only temporarily) after installing the Moto drivers will probably help clear up some users problems. This is true for any USB device, by the way.

I downloaded the driver to my new Vista loaded notebook, however when it searches for my phone, which is a Pebl U6 it says it cannot locate it and for me to manually search on a list, which I do with lots listed but it isn’t on there!!! It worked on XP, please help me!!!!

Tom

Alan Bruno, Tony Huff, Tom – Thanks for your comments here. I followed your instructions, more or less and fiddled with the tings you guys talked about and got it to work. My Vista install is on my D drive because C was too full, so none of my old stuff, including Motorola Mobile Phone Tools showed up on my new Vista screen. (It turns Out I had installed Motorola Mobile Phone Tools on my K drive.) After your instructions, the thing worked, except for one thing – when MPT first comes up, along with the welcome-logo thing, I get an error message window displaying “Invalid registry key”. After clicking OK, everything works. I have since moved the Motorola Mobile Phone Tools directory from my K drive to my D drive and it works that way too. Thanks, guys!

I’m trying to get Mobile Phone Tools Version 3.0 to install on a Vista machine. (it’s a new PC, with fresh Vista-not an upgrade). My MPT 3.0 won’t install from the CD…. says its the wrong OS. But from all the above posts, I take it they all got it to work, or was that only because it was a Vista upgraded PC and MPT was installed on original PC with XP?
It’s because I have MPT 3.0, can I upgrade to 4.0 via internet free of charge??
Anyone know?? help.

I can’t say how much this thread and all of your comments meant to me to get MPT working, I even re bought the newer version of MPT as my old V3 version didn’t seem to want to work including online updating.
One thing I missed which given my career is a joke that I missed it, is that you must take note if you are running 32 bit or 64 bit hardware. My new laptop is 64 bit and trying to follow these instructions while assuming I was still in 32 bit land didn’t work. As soon as I re-read this thread with a fresh mind and realized I was 64 bit and downloaded the correct driver package, it worked like a dream first time.
Thanks one and all for you contributions, this is truly what being part of an online community is all about….

It seems like there is a version between 4.0 and 4.2 – like maybe a 4.12 or something? I just reinstalled MPT on a new laptop, and noticed on one of the updates it listed 2 new versions. I decided not to skip the earlier version and installed them in order. Maybe that is it?

May 22nd, 2007 at 6:00 pm
Hmm, If you have the original MPT disk, I would uninstall then reinstall to see if you can upgrade then. Remember, when you check for updates, DO THEM IN ORDER! There is one screen that presents 2 updates, one newer, and it is very tempting to just go to it. Don’t. Do them in version order.
I’m pretty sure you have to have the latest version of MPT to work with Vista, so that is the first thing that must happen.
I would think that if you have the latest version, AND you have the Motorola drivers linked above, that then the phone would get setup after a couple of tries. Don’t forget to try another USB port, just in case.

I followed your instructions and was able to get the phone working. However, when I try to run Live Update, nothing happens.
I downloaded the Check Live Update (CheckLU.exe) utility from the support site and it says that I am not an administrator. Everything else shows fine. I verified that I am configured as an administrator and not as a standard user.
Anyone else have this happen? Anyone find a solution?
Thanks!

I got 4.5.1c working in Vista Ultimate after tweaking the registry with respect to mp3 codec. That was with an adminstrator account. When exiting, I get prompted to permit a silent upload of a .reg file to HKCurrentUser.
The contents of the reg file are just user settings and are harmless. It’s a rather primitive way to edit the registry, though, and non-admin accounts won’t be able to complete it.
Other than that, it works in my administrator acocunt for a RAZR v3. I can edit music files, save as mp3, and transfer to/from the phone.
If I switch to a different Vista user account (my daughter’s, whose phone this is for) I cannot connect to the phone with Melody Studio. It seems to run, but clicking on the ‘my phone’ tab gives a message that ‘cannot communicate’.
If I try File Transfer Studio, the phone beeps and boops, but the Mobile Phone window is empty.
Can anyone suggest resolutions? I got the mp3 codec regedit fix here, and appreciate the help. More wisdom would be wonderful.

After about 2.5 hours of effort I was able to get MPT working on Vista. Here is the sequence I followed [note UAC is turned off]:
1. Uninstalled previous installation that would not update to v4.51c, rebooted
2. Reinstalled from CD [v4.04]:
2.1 Browsed to the install CD in Explorer, went to Boot directory, right click on setup.exe and select properties, on the Compatibility tab selected run this program in compatibility mode for winXP SP2, select OK and then double click on setup.exe to start the install
2.2 Whenever Vista asks about unsigned drivers, chose Install Anyway
3. Rebooted the machine, launched MPT, first attempt to run update Wizard not successful due to firewall blockage
4. Plugged in a phone and launched MPT, got to main application and selected menu/setup/update
5. Updater reported 3 files to download
5.1 v4.04 to 4.21a [14.26 MB]
5.2 v4.21a to 4.36 [17.76 MB]
5.3 v4.36 to 4.51c [20.65 MB]
6. Downloaded all three files and seleced install
7. MPT is closed down by the updater, also unplugged the phone
8. Takes quite a while to install the updates, again selected Install Anyway each time I was asked
9. Started MPT, plugged in phone, recognized ok by Vista and MPT
10. Started Melody Studio, when trying to transfer a ring tone to the phone got the mp3 codec error message.
11. Followed instructions to update registry here
http://www.looprecorder.de/tut_l3codec.php
12. Ringtone successfully transferred

I got this working by turning the phone off, then back on. Why that would matter, since nothing gets installed on the phone (to my knowledge), I have no clue. But it works now.

Can somebody tell me what the version should be? I downloaded the driver MSI, which states that it’s version 2.7.6 (in it’s name), but after running it and plugging in my phone, in Device Manager, the device (which I’m guessing is Modems/Motorola USB Modem) has a driver version 2.7.0.0 (modified April 2007). Does that sound correct?

Alternative site to download the drivers:

If you have any trouble to download it at the MOTODEV site, try it.

I have spent countless hours trying to figure this out, I have it all working thanks to Oliver’s most recent post.
I have everything working down to the melody studio or at least I thought, it seems my phone doesn’t want to work with me here at the moment in terms of me adding my person ringtones as either .mp3,wav,amr,adp these are the only opinions given to me.
The last two obviously don’t work, but wav & mp3 work on my razer, its just my phone won’t let me select any of my new added files as ringtones, and I already have a few mp3.files on there as ringtones.
I’m really confused by how diffcult this has to be and if anyone can lend a helping hand it will be thanked muchly.

I used a slightly different method to install on my machine with complete success. HEre you go:
From a clean Vista Install, from an Admin account:
-Installed the REG fix at http://www.looprecorder.de/tut_l3codec.php
-Installed the updated drivers from the MOTODEV site at the beginning of the post
-Installed the MPT 4.12 CD
- Allowed update to 4.21
- Plugged in the phone when told
This resulted in immediate success, including MP3 upload to phone, which had been unsuccessful on another machine.
You guys Rock- this is why I pay $40 a month for internet.

Addendum- I have since updated the software to 4.51 by right clicking on the start menu icon labled “Motorola Live Update” and choosing “Run as administrator.” Apparently the software does not want to run under non-elevated privileges in Vista…you get a warning each time you start, but this occassional check for new software should be sufficient.

Hi, I’m using MPT 4.51c in Vista Home Premium. Everything works great, the program recognize my Phone (Razr V3) and I can transfer images, videos and MP3 with no problems. The only issue is about the silent upload of a .reg file to HKCurrentUser when exiting the application. Is It normal? How can I fix it?
Thanks in advance…

Hi all, what I had to do to work with MPT4 in mi Vista Home Premium was the following. Download the drivers (top of this page), install them, install MPT4 (select Run as administrator), set the compatibility of the program to windows 2000, reinstalled the drivers, and finally installed the codec. Hope this works for some of you. Everything is in this board.

I have to run everything on windows xp coz i cannot get it to work on Vista.

The easy way to install on Vista which worked for me is right click and run the Motorola Phone Tools installer (4.04b) as administrator. Let it install then it will start to Live Update as part of the install process to version 4.5.1c. Then it will give you loads of warnings about unsigned drivers which you allow to install. Once installed you need to run the program always as administrator (right click icon and change settings in Properties – Compatibilities – Privilege Level) and it works fine with my L6 phone and Outlook 2007.
I did get the missing codec error when using the Melody Studio but all I had to do was change one registry key to fix that as detailed here: http://www.looprecorder.de/tut_l3codec.php

MPT version 4.5.1c O/S Vista ultimate
phone V3xx
Issue: After clean install MPT will auto switch mass storage to Modem modem only once. Phone is by default on data mode. When connected to pc it is seen as mass storage. Start MPT can not detect phone device(Still in Mass storage mode) will not auto switch to Modem mode like it did the first time:
Solution:A work around you must go to your phone USB connection setting and change the default mode to communication. disconect and reconnect phone. It should now be in modem mode. start MPT and it will now detect phone. If you want your phone to be as mass storage you will have to change your setting on the phone back to data mode. Motorola will need to fix this it is a bug

Thanks to Tom and Alann Bruno, for your very helpful tips! I finally got the phone tools to work, by installing the download from Motorola’s developer page, then uninstalling and reinstalling MPT 4.0 from my CD, along with the subsequent updates. Not sure if this was significant, but I also tried plugging the USB cable into a different port (it didn’t even ask me for the type of phone this time).
All in all, your website saved the life of an innocent laptop and a brand new KRAZR phone! I’m going to e-mail Motorola, as I don’t know why they don’t have this kind of help on their download/FAQ sites. I’m not a developer, so I never would have found this update on my own. Weird!

ok, so I have installed MPT, and also the driver fix as described above, but MPT still will not detect my phone. I run the program and it says to plug the phone in, so i do, and it says “please wait, your phone is being installed and set up” and then it pauses for a second, and gives me a message saying “MPT has not detected your mobile phone” any suggestions? I have a Razr and am running Vista. Pluggen into back usb as well……

this is an update for a Razr V3xx version with 2gig microSD. somehow on the microSD card there was a file on the root directory of th SD card named WMPInfo.xml. if you see this file delete it it’s not needed. the only directory you should see on a V3xx on is Mobile. That is all I have. After I removed the file With my data connection set to memory card. Assuming all drivers are up to date ie vista x32 or vista x64 with the phone connected it should recognize it like a flash drive. if it does that’s a good sign. start MPT and it should now recognize and autoswitch your phone to modem modem. Now if you have unlimit internet like I do I can now click on internet connections and and use the 3G speed to surf the net behind our comppanies firewall weee.

Hi,
On the advice of a Alltel tech. I purchased Motorola Tools 4.0 for $50. Even though the box doesn’t say it supports Vista, I was told it works.
I tried it, It didn’t. Apparently it can’t find my first generation Razr drivers. As a matter of fact when it goes online to look for them, the program stops in the middle of the search. I’m getting ready to dump Vista and load XP into my new laptop as a last resort. Any other suggestions? Anyone?

Okay I have a similar problem.
I can connect to my moto a630 via bluetooth to my Vista PC.
I can move things off of the phone, but I can’t move anything onto it. I tried moving some ringtones and it says “Request denied by phone (Internal server error (0×50))”. The only answer I found anyway about that error says to unlock the keys. The keys are not locked.
If I try a second time in a row it starts to move the mp3 and then after about a minute of trying my phone disconnects and I get an error “The communication link has been broken by phone.”
I’ve tried to reset the phone, and Vista and no dice.
help.

Okay (typing with gritted teeth), I have tried all the advice above….I have installed the driver after I installed MPT. Still didn’t recognize my phone. I uninstalled everything – then installed MPT THEN the driver. Still didn’t recognize my phone. I’ve tried to go into device manager – it shows nothing even though EVERY time I run through the setup and get shut down, the little task bar comes up and says Motorola Modem successfully installed. Please tell me what I’m doing wrong…. my KRZR is getting very close to crashing out the window alongside my new Vista computer.

I just want to tell everyone having this problem there is hope, this download works perfectly. You just have to do it just like this: Open divise manager. Under modems right click the motorola phone and click uninstall. Then uninstall Motorola Phone Tools. Then download and install this driver file. Now plug in your phone. This forces vista to assign a driver to it and since the only file installed is the new one it will assign it correctly. Next, unplug your phone and install phone tools and update it. Then open Phone tools and plug your phone in when it says to. It should work fine and if you were getting the ras entry creation/modification error when you were trying to connect to the internet you shouldn’t get it any more. Thanks guys, I was so mad when I couldn’t get mine working on my new computer, but you have really made my day!

Brian, you probably should look for a program called dbpoweramp music converter. With it you can run your mp3′s to any bit rate you like and it works just fine with MPT’s.

NOTHING worked….this fucking CD is going out the window and i will NEVER buy ANY motorola product….crappiest piece of shit ever made by anyone…works fine on xp but they are too fucking lazy to make a universally working driver. I AM SOOOOO PISSED OFF AT MOTOROLA. i waisted 2 hours on a computer trying to get this piece of shit working but it is IMPOSSIBLE to make it work. FUCK MOTOROLA.

Roo,
I was running into that same “unkown error” code. What I did to get around it was run it as an administrator. To do this I went into start, right clicked on the program and the option to run as administrator came up and away I went. This will allow you to run Live Update. Hopefully this helps… I’m still in the middle of it. Have fun.

I have a dell laptop core Duo 2 on it with Windows Vista Business. I wanted to transfer pictures from my Motorola V3 to my laptop. I downloaded the Motorola Driver from Motorola site and I could able to charge my mobile though the USB port. I installed Motorola Phone Tools 4. After the installation it asked me to download the updtes, I allowed and after the installation is gave me unknown error message box. If I click ok, MPT open and asks me to plug the USB to phone, when I do that, it recognizes the phone but after half the installation, it says cannot install the phone. I tried uninstalling both, and installed MPT alone and then latest driver but it still says the same.
I tried recognizing the phone manually but the driver list is EMPTY. Can somebody help me out?

hi there , just want to say thanks like everyone here. the drivers worked like a charm. one thing i would like to share though is that i was unable to make MPT detect the phone even after installing the drivers initially . this happened because i was not running MPT in administrator mode. i thought it would automatically run in that mode but apparently it doesnt. you have to right click on the MPT icon wherever it is (usually the desktop) and then select “run as administrator”. i did that and bingo! , it detected the phone just fine. hope this helps. thanks again.

This really works guys.
First you have to install that Handset_USB_Driver-32_v3.1.0.msi without any of your MOBILE PHONE TOOLS installed (if you did, uninstall it from your control panel)
Then run that MOBILE PHONE TOOLS, then you are ready to go.
It was very easy except that I have to uninstall my MOBILE PHONE TOOLS first.
good luck!

Al, Colin:
Apparently, Motorola updated their driver and download link, so the link was broken. I have fixed it, and it is now pointing to the correct page. I have not had a chance to test this version because I gave up on Vista and switched to XP and Ubuntu for all my PCs. Maybe you can tell us how the new ones work?

Well done. I uninstalled everything I had done. Then started afresh by dowloading the file, which suddenly appeared in the programme list as if by magic! (Hmmmmm!), re-installed the tools and actually found that it was able to download the current updates. Hey Presto! All worked and is fine.
Did I say “magic” ?

I got the motorola phone tools to work on vista, but now I have encountered a new program. I tried to use the ringtone studio to create a few custom ringtones. I could edit the songs but when I try to save them the program had an error and wouldn’t save in MP3 format! My only option was to save the ringtones in WAV format. The Razr V3M does not recognize WAV files so these were useless to me. Any ideas why I cannot save ringtones that I create. (When I used MPT with my old PC, which had windows XP, it worked perfectly. But every since I got a new PC with vista I cant get the ringtones to save as mp3.) Help please!!! Thanks

I went to that link and followed the steps (downloaded WMP 11, Verified the file l3codecp.acm, and verified that the following registry keys were set). I still keep receiving the message “Failed to Create File” when I try to save to my PC, and “Unsupported format (mp3 codec may be inappropriate or missing)” when I try to transfer files directly to my phone. I don’t know if this matters, but when I tried to install Windows Media Player 11 it wouldnt let me because it said I had a newer version already installed. I also had trouble understanding what these directions mean in step 3:
See also: Description of the Microsoft Windows registry
Tip: You can extract the files that are included in wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe by the following command line, without installing the Media Player:
wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe /T:c:\extract /C
l3codecp.acm is included in the extracted file wmp11.exe:
c:\extract\wmp11.exe /T:c:\extract\wmp11 /C
Can someone please help so i can save ringtones and transfer!!!!! Thanks
