Qila and Noah managed to get sprayed by a skunk this morning at approximately 4am – so much for sleeping in today. In case you are wondering, the skunk ended up getting the worst part of the deal – so far, the score is Backyard Critters 0, Qila 4 – but I had to deal with de-stinking the dogs and the house.
For those that are interested, tomato juice is apparently not the best choice .
I used the following recipe to bath the dogs. I found out later that Mythbusters actually tested different recipes, and this one won hands-down:
Skunk Smell Removal Recipe:
Mix the ingredients in a bucket (The quantities listed below worked well for a small dog; I used 5X of each ingredient because a Samoyed has a very thick coat). Fill a sponge up with the mixture and apply liberally to your dog’s coat. Let soak for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Don’t try to store this mixture, because #1, it is a chemical factory of oxygen that loses its efficiency fairly quickly, and #2 closed container of this stuff will probably explode.
Unless I have olfactory fatigue, I believe it removed most of the smell from both dogs. One more bath today would probably get the rest, but you actually have to sniff their coat to smell the odor, which wasn’t the case at 5am when I went to Wal-Mart to put a dent in their stock of hydrogen peroxide.

We had a skunk attack very early on the morning of the Fourth. Sometime before 5, Moose started barking. I think the odor did more to wake me than Mr. Moose’s voice. Principi prowled anxiously, sniffing one floor vent and then another.
We were in “hunker down” mode. This has happened before, and the best tactic is to keep everybody cool and calm. If the varmint is under the house, commotion only makes the spray worse. Since this was the first attack this summer, I suspected we were victims of a “drive by.”
The smell subsided around 6, so I roused the dog and the cat, made them take care of morning business, then put Moose in the shower.
I showered, too, fully expecting the scent to ooze from my pores the rest of the afternoon but the Danville crowd was lucky. It wasn’t that bad, after all.
However, when I got back home around 6:30 last night, I smelled skunk. By this morning, though, all seemed to be clear.
I’m gonna hang onto your recipe, though, because I might need it for ME sometime.

Has anyone heard of dogosuds made by dinovite. I have a friend that used the lavender scent and it only took one shampooing to remove the skunk smell. They also have some other all natural ingredient products. Heres the link if anyone is interested. http://www.dinovite.com/index.php/shampoos

I use and LOVE DogOsuds made by Dinovite! I’ve used all four scents. My favorites are the Peppermint Tea Tree and the Essential Oil blend. I haven’t had to use them to destunk; however I know people that used the Lavender and the Peppermint Tea Tree and it got rid of the skunk smell in one application. The shampoo is also flea and tick deterrent which is a nice benefit. My dogs aren’t outside too much I do not need to add additional meds or anything.
I personally love using the DogOsuds for MY hand and shower soap! It may sound weird at first; however it’s all natural human therapeutic grade essential oils and I try to avoid chemicals any time I can.

Too cool! Thanks for the great info Terrie & Lynn. I also am a Dogosuds user for my pet and self. I noticed the same great skunk removal smell as well. It works great removing “dead frog” smells as well. Larkin tends to find the nastiest smells to roll in!
