I recently had the opportunity to tour Miss Laura’s here in Fort Smith, and it was a special visit. Although history was not my strong subject growing up, I find myself fascinated by it when you are walking in the same buildings, grounds, and occupying the same space of such a?rich history as found here in Fort Smith.
I lived here for over 10 years before visiting Judge Parkers and the Fort Smith Museum of History, and now Miss Laura’s. What is particularly sad about this fact is there are people who have lived here all their life and never visited these and other places of interest, and then complain about how stupid the city leaders are, or how Fort Smith is going backwards compared to Northwest Arkansas.
I have been places, you know, and Fort Smith will never be New Orleans, New York, or San Francisco, or a hundred other places that many of you visit each year. But what it is is a very unique place that because of its place in Western American history, there is no other place like it. ?Hell, Fort Smith helped form the?Great American West. ?No other town in the southern United States even comes close to that statement.
Now, the city is trying?their best to land the US Marshals Museum, and ALL of us need to do our part. One way is to simply visit the Fort Smith Museum and the Fort Smith National Historic site. At the very least, rent True Grit, and see a small taste of the history of the town. Learn what a great and unique experience the town has, and appreciate how great of city this could be with just a little more effort on everyone’s part.
